Plaza del Carmen, Camaguey

In the historic center of this Cuban city, declared Cultural Heritage, it is located one of the most picturesque places, the Plaza del Carmen. It emerged in the early decades of the nineteenth century. This square is now an important architectural ensemble of the village -founded in 1514- by the Spanish. It is an important place of traditional folk culture in Camaguey.

A beautiful set of sculptural pieces, made by renowned Cuban artist Martha Jimenez, recreates people who lived in that space. The series includes other elements, with allusions to people, as well as benches and planters.

Traditionalists facets of the local environment identify the characters of the sculpture. It adds a new appeal to one of the top five places in the oldest part of the town. Among the pieces that attracted the most attention of the visitors is the newspaper reader, also a resident of the area near this place.

In this place, the architecture stands out, with its irregular courtyards and facades, simple and modest; even those that coated their covers following the winds of modernity.
